♬Liner Notes♬: It's a week of some well-known names with The National, Ocean Blue, Alison Moyet, Akron/Family, Future Bible Heroes, Laura Marling, Radiation City and much more...

Laura Marling
"Where Can I Go/I Was An Eagle/You Know"
'Once I Was An Eagle'
Ribbon, 2013
Note: We kick off this week with Pitchfork noting that the UK songstress' fourth album is "the first of her albums to sound like a vigorously polished, hard-won achievement. It’s expansive and ambitious, and divorced of all the tweedy preening and aw-shucks raggediness the idea of “folk” has accumulated in recent years. It's dark, it’s angry, it’s even sexy, in a sly, subtle way." What started out as one song turned into three! I don't think that's happened on PUTV before...
(More Info)

MS MR
"Bones"
'Secondhand Rapture'
Columbia, 2013
Note: "The world inside Secondhand Rapture always seems on the verge of breaking. The title fits; either we’re vicariously surging with joy or we’re riding to the afterlife on someone else’s heels. Given the marriage of apocalyptic lyrics with sugared hooks, it’s probably both at once. MS MR perform dark, wild pop that spills over itself, song after song." Ah, they're on Columbia, so THAT's how this song got on 'Game Of Thrones'!
(More Info)

Ocean Blue
"Sunset/Moonrise"
'Ultramarine'
Korda, 2013
Note: Wow, this Pennsylvania dream pop band has been kicking it since 1986! "It's been more than a decade since Pennsylvania's The Ocean Blue released a full-length album and... It was worth the wait. The 12 songs on "Ultramarine" recall the sincere clarity of the band's self-titled 1989 debut and 1991's "Cerulean" with songs that soar with grace, blend cascading guitars and rich keyboards with lyrics that manage to evoke sentimentality, optimism and an appropriate romantic longing without being cloying or grating." Damn, I remember seeing videos from 'Cerulean' on '120 Minutes' back in the day!
(More Info)

Radiation City
"Foreign Bodies"
'Animals in the Median'
Tender Loving Empire, 2013
Note: The Portland quintet's new record has "abundance of riches and the perfect soundtrack to spring. Released on local label Tender Loving Empire, Animals in the Median is a highly polished gem, glittering with a bossa nova whimsy that provides the pulse for a dozen sophisticated pocket-orchestra pop songs that never venture past the five-minute mark."
(More Info)

Lucy Schwartz
"Timekeeper"
'Timekeeper'
Fortunate Fool, 2013
Note: "Budding LA artist Lucy Schwartz has already had her songs featured in numerous films and television shows, including the recently revived Arrested Development. Today's Top Tune is the title track from her forthcoming album, Timekeeper." But that's not all! "The single is the first from Schwartz’s upcoming album Timekeeper, due August 6. And if you’re wondering how her song ended up snagging the high-profile spot in the show’s finale, well, it seems that AD creator Mitch Hurwitz is a big fan. “Lucy’s latest album is her Sgt. Pepper,” says Hurwitz. “Unbelievable. I can’t stop playing it or thinking about it. So brilliant and amazing.” One more fun fact: Schwartz also provided the fake-British voice for AD‘s “Mr. F” and “For British Eyes Only” tunes."
(More Info)

Jason Isbell
"Stockholm"
'Southeastern'
Southeastern, 2013
Note: "Jason Isbell has always been closely associated with the groups he’s been a part of: Drive-By Truckers and, more recently, The 400 Unit, with whom he’s released two albums. While members of the latter step in to back him up on Southeastern, for the first time since his 2007 solo debut, Sirens Of The Ditch, listeners are able to hear an unfiltered representation of this Alabamian prodigy, and the results are so stellar it’s not hyperbole to say that he could be his generation’s answer to Steve Earle."
(More Info)

Baptist Generals
"Dog That Bit You"
'Jackleg Devotional to the Heart'
Sub Pop, 2013
Note: AllMusic says, "With just about a decade passing between Denton, Texas outfit the Baptist Generals' 2003 debut No Silver/No Gold and the illustrious follow-up Jackleg Devotional to the Heart, the expectations for some classic hard-fought masterpiece-type album are high... Maintaining a roots rock backbone, Flemmons and company strike some holy middle ground between Crazy Horse and Neutral Milk Hotel on songs like "Oblivion" and "Dog That Bit You," exploring some serious existential ponderance without skimping on the guitar solos."
(More Info)

Future Bible Heroes
"Living, Loving, Partygoing"
'Partygoing'
Merge, 2013
Note: Popmatters notes the similarities between The Magnetic Fields and "related group Future Bible Heroes — the trio of Stephin Merritt, Claudia Gonson and Chris Ewen — has always relied on synthesizers, though it’s been Ewen playing them. Yet their third album, Partygoing, is their first since 2002, which makes it doubtful the group has been fresh on the minds of today’s young record-buyers. That’s probably why Merge is releasing Partygoing simultaneously with a boxset of all three albums and their related EPs. Of the three albums, Partygoing might be the one that sounds most like early Magnetic Fields"
(More Info)

The National
"This Is The Last Time"
'Trouble Will Find Me'
4AD, 2013
Note: The Cincinnati band's sixth full-length debuted at number three in the US and the UK, which is interesting because I always thought these guys were British! Pretty Much Amazing says, "Trouble Will Find Me may draw on some of the creativity of their early work, but it is firmly rooted in the sound that the band has so assuredly developed over the last two albums. The members have said that this album is more complex and aggressive, suggesting a noticeable departure from High Violet."
(More Info)

Akron/Family
"Sand Talk"
'Sub Verses'
Dead Oceans, 2013
Note: Song source KEXP says, "Formed out of the fertile Williamsburg, NY, scene of the early 2000s, the experimental rock outfit Akron/Family has built a career on being creatively unpredictable and uncompromisingly shifting their sound in different settings... Opening with a squall of feedback-drenched guitars that falls somewhere between shoegaze and post-punk, “Sand Talk” is a fierce, confident next step for the group. Halfway through the song, the band shifts into a psychedelic, Animal Collective-esque swirl of hazy keyboards before jumping back into the raucous tumble of the song’s beginning." I remember spinning their early records on Swans' frontman's label Young God back at WSHC.
(More Info)

Sun Gods To Gamma Rays
"Burn Me Through" single
self-released, 2013
Note: Song source The Current says, "Sun Gods To Gamma Ray’s style is much more ethereal than their original incarnation. There’s a lot of space imagery – Kocka drops some key words in their biography: “soundscape,” “twinkling” and “cosmos” to name a few. But they’re also quick to note a philosophical influence which accounts for the minimalist instrumentation and nostalgic, washed out lyrics. “Burn Me Through” is the first taste of their forthcoming debut record due out early fall."
(More Info)

Alison Moyet
"Horizon Flame"
'The Minutes'
Cooking Vinyl, 2013
Note: We end this week, not with our usual Pacific Northwest closer (it was a repeat), but like we began - with a British songstress! If Laura Marling is the up-and-comer, then Alison Moyet is the legend. Her eighth studio album is out now. The National says, "The English singer Alison Moyet started out as one half of the influential synth-pop duo Yazoo. Hits such as Only You paved the way for a solo career, which began with her multimillion selling 1984 debut, Alf. Moyet’s latest record, the minutes, packs sophisticated electronic pop, produced by Guy Sigsworth (Björk, Robyn, Madonna)."

'#ThePurge': The #1 Film In America Is A Giant, Satanic Ritual

Tue, 2013-06-11 00:24
Check out this #HolyHexes exclusive!

Hollywood once again proves their originality and bias towards the globalists. Wait, do they really? Walking out of the movie theater in Tucson, AZ, I said to a theater staff member “The movie sucked. Don’t see it. I got dragged into going to see it” in place of what I should’ve really said: “This movie was no ordinary slasher film; there seemed to be insidious intent and purpose, especially by the insertion of some obscure devices, and the generally implausible plot reflecting the demented psyche of the elite that we find hard to grasp or understand. The plot summary is as follows: “In the not-too-distant future, a new political regime, called the New Founding Fathers of America, attempts to control an epidemic of violence and crime by imposing strict martial law, and by trying out a new experiment called The Purge, where three times a year, for 12 hours, murder is completely legal.”

Among the themes of the movie, aside from pointless murder and 'A Clockwork Orange'-esque brutality on a less believable scale, I spotted references to eugenics, satanic ritual, child sacrifice and underage pornography, all of which led me to believe that this culture of death that Hollywood is promoting hasn’t seen the end of its bloodlust yet. There are more films to come that push the envelope on violent horror with emphasis on small indicators that only the initiated can spot - those aware of the hidden agendas, the secret societies and their bad blood against free humanity. Let’s start with underage pornography. The #1 film in America, seen by countless millions of eyes, first offers an inappropriate scene featuring a minor, Zoey Sandin, and her too-old-to-be-with-her boyfriend Henry. They are kissing, which is okay, until there is a scene where the boy can be seen lifting the girl’s bare thigh as he appears to be having sex with her. That’s strike one, a definite oddity that I didn’t appreciate. I could picture Henry Kissinger snickering in his movie seat, snatching the popcorn out of ol’ Condi’s fingertips. In the back of the theater, David Rockefeller is knitting his hands together maliciously, enjoying the scene immensely. Theater operations funded by the Bush dynasty, of course. The cushioned seats plush red, like gourmet Rothschild wine. Or the blood of innocents?

@PumpUpThaVolume: #Episode062 - #Recover

Sun, 2013-06-09 03:43

♫Makin' a soundtrack for another planet to hear♫" on Episode062 - Recover which features brand new sounds from Gaudi, Tricky, Generationals, Bibio, IG88, Big Black Delta, Stripmall Architecture, CHVRCHES, Queens of the Stone Age, Charms, Taj Raj and Big Eyes...

Episode062: MP3/Feed\Archive

Previous: Episode061 - Live On

****************************************
♬Liner Notes♬: Welcome back to another week of exciting new music! This week we're stoked to get from Tricky, Queens Of The Stone Age, CRVRCHES, Charms, Gaudi and much more... Let's Pump Up Tha Volume!

Gaudi
"Planet X"
'In Between Times'
Six Degrees, 2013
Note: We'll begin this week with a sweet instrumental from a new album that features guest appearances from The Orb, Lee "Scratch" Perry and more! Remix Nation says, "In Between Times could be one of his most diverse albums yet. Legends like Lee Scratch Perry are scattered across the album and add diversity. Gaudi’s music brings listeners into a trance that takes them on a journey. The heavy thumping background bass-lines create rhythm while anything from bongos to violins provide a stable melody."
(More Info)

Tricky
"Nothing's Changed" (w/ Francesca Belmonte)
'False Idols'
False Idols/Studio !K7, 2013
Note: Soundblab says, "Tricky's new album has been touted as a sequel of sorts to his legendary debut, Maxinquaye. You can see why. Many tracks have the same loping, stoned paranoiac vibe which Tricky all but patented on that record... standout tracks include...the down-tempo, orchestral chill and trip hop vibes of 'Nothing's Changed'" This is Tricky's 10th studio album but - to this day - 'Maxinquaye' maintains its desert island disc status with me. It's synonymous with 1995 for me. Me and my gf (at the time) even made a road trip to Lollapalooza '97 in Charlotte specifically to go see Tricky!
(More Info)

Generationals
"Spinoza"
'Heza'
Polyvinyl, 2013
Note: Pitchfork says, "Indie bands namedropping philosophers is nothing new-- people still call it "college rock" for a reason. Neither is the employ of irony, and Generationals appear to be double-dipping on "Spinoza," the New Orleans duo's lead single from their third album, Heza... the zippy melodies and clean electric strums of "Spinoza" recalls the Drums' pretty vacancy, balancing out their ostensibly cerebral ambitions."
(More Info)

Bibio
"A Tout L'Heure"
'Silver Wilkinson'
Warp, 2013
Note: Resident Advisor says, "Anyone anxiously awaiting the upcoming Boards Of Canada album, and who imagines the duo to be utterly peerless, would do well to investigate Bibio. Stephen Wilkinson's music has about it the same Polaroid blur as BoC's, indistinctly reminiscent of past halcyon days, distorted and recoloured by memory. Silver Wilkinson is his first album since 2011's Mind Bokeh. The term "bokeh" is a Japanese word for the defocussed area of a photograph—an area he continues to explore on Silver Wilkinson. "
(More Info)

IG88
"Drowning In Pinwheels" (w/ Bed Of Stars)
'Breathing Suit'
Nueva Forma, 2013
Note: Song source KEXP says, "Named partially for a character in Star Wars and partially for his birth year, Seattle-based producer Branden Clarke makes lush, atmospheric electronic music under the moniker IG88... As its sunny title suggests, “Drowning In Pinwheels” is filled with luminescent tones that arrive just in time for long summer nights."
(More Info)

Eleanor Friedberger
"Stare At The Sun"
'Personal Record'
Merge, 2013
Note: Pretty Much Amazing says, "The Fiery Furnaces’ Eleanor Friedberger is one of the best lyricists in the game, which is part of why I’m still spinning her excellent 2011 record Last Summer, an exhaustive account of the first summer she spent in New York as a young woman. She’s following that up with Personal Record, which is apparently (and ironically) less autobiographical. Its first single is “Stare at the Sun,” which might be familiar to you if you’ve seen Eleanor live within the last year or so. It’s a bubbly, driving, effortless guitar pop track that sounds like its title, grounded in Eleanor’s distinctive voice and wordy, smart lyrics."
(More Info)

Big Black Delta
"The Zebrah"
'Big Black Delta'
Masters of Bates, 2013
Note: Vita says, "Severing his drab-rock roots, former Mellowdrone main man Jonathan Bates has gone electro with his new gig. Released in April, Big Black Delta’s self-titled album runs the synthesized spectrum from cosmically ambient to Crystal Castles-do-Depeche Mode thrusters. At times danceable and darkly soothing, the 13-track treat is a compelling electronic pop tour. In the studio, BBD is pretty much Bates and a laptop, but the past M83 touring member brings dueling drummers on the road."
(More Info)

Stripmall Architecture
"Suburban Reverb"
'Suburban Reverb'
self-released, 2013
Note: Song source KEXP says, "Suburban Reverb is the third full-length album produced by...a band comprised (mostly) of Rebecca and Ryan Coseboom. Inspired by British and German electronic music (and “angry, angry birds”, according to their Facebook page), the duo is memorable for their energetically dissonant music and their delicately pretty vocals... Do not adjust your stereo. The drama-soaked sounds coming from Stripmall Architecture’s “Suburban Reverb” are intentional and provocatively owned."
(More Info)

CHVRCHES
"Recover"
'Recover' EP
Glassnote, 2013
Note: Featuring a former member of Aereogramme? Whoa, they rocked my skull!" No Ripcord says, If you haven’t heard of CHVRCHES, get excited. This Glaswegian outfit has left everyone salivating, and for good reason. The last time a new artist has gotten me so energized was M.I.A.... CHVRCHES is best described as synth-pop, maybe electro-pop, but definitely and inexplicably not derivative of the 80s style they’ve magically transformed. They’re as much The Knife as they are Depeche Mode as they are Purity Ring. The music is the aural equivalent of a flashing neon sign or a shimmering sequined gown. They sound like everything but are comparable to nothing. It’s absolutely immersive."
(More Info)

Queens of the Stone Age
"The Vampyre of Time and Memory"
'...Like Clockwork'
Matador, 2013
Note: The band that has been inescapable this week as they unseat Daft Punk from the top of the pops, the reviews are stellar across the board and I even saw they did an hour-long 'Live On Letterman' gig (and look, now there they are on 'Later... With Jools Holland'!) - it's the return of the mighty QOTSA! "Josh Homme almost died. Actually, he did die…for a brief moment. While on an operating table receiving knee surgery, undisclosed complications nearly took his life... The Queens of the Stone Age frontman cites this event as a key inspiration for …Like Clockwork, the band’s sixth studio album. Incapacitated and unable to “get up” for four months following the operation, he had a spiritual awakening of sorts... “The Vampyre of Time and Memory” was Homme’s first post-surgery composition."
(More Info)

Charms
"Wartime"
'Hillary' EP
self-released, 2013
Note: Song source KEXP says, "Charms bring a brightness to the Seattle garage rock scene. Their fuzzy tunes have a uniquely jangling nature to them, keeping things upbeat and depending more on complex melody and bright energy than grit and gristle like many of their garage counterparts... “Wartime” is the cream of the crop here, though. A bright guitar hook drives the tune forward, only ever building momentum over the track’s two and a half minutes."
(More Info)

Taj Raj
"Romani"
'Fine Hearts Alive' EP
self-released, 2013
Note: Minnesnowta Music says that "With a new alt-country sound, Taj Raj are set to release their album “Fine Hearts Alive” at the Turf Club June 1st. This new sound fits the group perfectly as they pay tribute to their Midwestern roots with some very folksy and light-hearted tracks highlighted by the song “Romani.”"
(More Info)

Big Eyes
"Nothing You Could Say"
'Almost Famous'
Grave Mistake, 2013
Note: And finally, our Pacific Northwest closer via KEXP this week "have been rocking the Seattle scene for a couple years now... ["Nothing You Could Say"] kicks things off with a straightforward and unfaltering bang. The track is a vintage rock jam, showcasing some really excellent counterpoint between the guitar and bass lines."

Sun, 2013-06-02 03:12

♫Makin' a soundtrack for another planet to hear♫" on Episode061 - Live On which features brand new sounds from Lorde, Rogue Wave, Classixx, Bonobo, T. Hardy Morris, JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound, Bored Nothing, The Knife, Tom Rowlands, Dan Israel, Chk Chk Chk and Cali Giraffes...

Episode061: MP3/Feed\Archive

Previous: Episode060 - Silver Lining

****************************************
♬Liner Notes♬: Slammin' electro, singer/songwriter soul and everything in between! This week's got !!!, Tom Rowlands of The Chemical Brothers, Classixx, Lorde, Rogue Wave, The Knife and much more... Let's Pump Up Tha Volume!

Lorde
"Royals"
'Love Club' EP
Lava/Republic, 2013
Note: We begin with a teen kiwi simply named Lorde. The Mostly Junk Food blog says, "New Zealand’s Lorde has the kind of huge vocals that will make you stop and listen... Her sound has the unique funk of Alex Winston and the attitude of M.I.A.. Did I mention she is only 16 years old?"
(More Info)

Rogue Wave
"College"
'Nightingale Floors'
Vagrant, 2013
Note: Billboard says, "The 10-song set is a return to the jangly, emotional indie-pop that helped the band develop a sizable following... Though the mood does get heavy at times, "Nightingale Floors" also features tracks like the rollicking, anthemic lead single, "College,""
(More Info)

Classixx
"All You're Waiting For" (w/ Nancy Whang)
'Hanging Gardens'
Innovative Leisure, 2013
Note: Insound says everyone at their office flipped over the die-cut album sleeve for the new album from Classixx. "Classixx have been intent on their debut Hanging Gardens, whittling the LP down from hundreds of sessions to a svelte 12 songs. At once beaming, breezy and wistful, Hanging Gardens features...the gleefully catchy Nancy Whang-featuring "All You're Waiting For"... Playing a wide array of instruments on Hanging Gardens, Classixx' full-length debut features impossibly sunny grooves, blithe melodies bred by the coast, coaxed out by the surf, expertly crafted for road trips, pool parties and dance clubs."
(More Info)

Bonobo
"Cirrus"
'The North Borders
Ninja Tune, 2013
Note: Pitchfork says, "A sense of déjà vu haunts The North Borders, UK producer Simon Green’s fifth studio album as Bonobo. It’s almost 15 years since he first appeared... Bonobo stood above the rest because his compositional touch was so instinctive: deftly coaxing complex emotions from machines while employing acoustic instrumentation sparingly to devastating effect."
(More Info)

T. Hardy Morris
"Lucky"
'Audition Tapes'
Dangerbird, 2013
Note: Ghetto Blaster says, "This summer T. Hardy Morris (who is also the frontman of Dead Confederate) will hit the road in support of Audition Tapes, his debut solo album... Audition Tapes finds Morris abundantly inspired, oftentimes invoking the grand spirits of Elliot Smtih, Alex Chilton or fellow Georgian Vic Chesnutt."
(More Info)

JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound
"Howl"
'Howl'
Bloodshot, 2013
Note: Rolling Stone says this title track is "hair-raising guitar chords and piano flourishes over a bubbling bass groove, while frontman Brooks sings of dissolved love in a voice that's as seductive as it is foreboding." (And we thank The Uptown Sound for the retweet love!)
(More Info)

Bored Nothing
"Let Down"
'Bored Nothing'
Spunk, 2013
Note: Again, Pitchfork says, "Melbourne, Australia's Fergus Miller aka Bored Nothing...wrote these songs while bumming semi-homeless around Australia for a few years, and as a result, they occupy a similar mindset: Miller and the characters in his songs are perpetually stoned, bored, or existentially lost. Sometimes all of the above."
(More Info)

The Knife
"A Tooth For An Eye"
'Shaking The Habitual'
Mute, 2013
Note: "Mysterious Swedish duo The Knife have released a triple album -- 98 minutes of music -- exploring the gamut of sound and emotion."
(More Info)

Tom Rowlands
"Through Me" single
Phantasy, 2013
Note: It is that Tom Rowlands! Song source KEXP says, "Since the group aren’t planning on having any new music out this year, Rowlands decided to cut two solo tracks during their downtime. The A-side of his debut solo single, “Through Me” isn’t a far cry from the Chemical Brothers’ recent work. Relatively fast paced and featuring a bouncy, New Order-esque bassline, it makes up for Rowlands’ usual beat bombast by building and dropping at well-timed points in the six-minute track." I got to see the Chemical Brothers at CMJ back in 2002 and I'm glad I did
(More Info)

Dan Israel
"Live On"
'Live On'
self-released, 2013
Note: The Minneapolis Star Tribune says about the local legend that "the title of Dan Israel’s new album, “Live On,” isn’t just a throwaway...especially considering the health issues Israel himself endured in the past couple years. “I basically have a very bad gut,” explained Israel, who’s heard more complicated medical terms through multiple visits to the Mayo Clinic. The visibly slimmer local music vet, 42, didn’t want to go into detail, especially since “Live On” is a remarkably upbeat, optimistic collection, with songs played mostly on acoustic guitar and piano straight out of a warm living room sing-along session." He's also simultaneously releasing a double LP vinyl set, cleverly called 'Danthology'.
(More Info)

Chk Chk Chk
"Careful"
'THR!!!ER'
Warp, 2013
Note: Last heard on Episode052, now Pretty Much Amazing says, "Five albums and over a decade into their career, !!! continue to deliver music that caters to the most primeval desire of any music listener: the need to dance. In this regard, THR!!!ER does not disappoint. Saturated with rousing jams steeped in a newly honed funk direction, THR!!!ER succeeds in its singular goal with flying colors." I'm gonna miss them at a small club here in Portland this Monday?!
(More Info)

Cali Giraffes
"All My Life" single
Fin, 2013
Note: Our Pacific Northwest closer this week is from legendary stock. Song source KEXP says, "Founded in 2010 by Lemonheads frontman Evan Dando, Cali Giraffes (formerly Calligraphers) have an origin story that is just as amazing as the band itself. It all started backstage at a show, where Dando was hit with inspiration. He must have had a pretty charismatic and solid pitch in order to bring a supremely talented musician out of retirement, and that’s exactly what Dando did when he added legendary Fastbacks singer and bassist Kim Warnick to the project. Guitarist Mikey Davis (Alien Crime Syndicate) also joined the fun and, as they say, the rest is history." But then Dando left, Josh Freese joined them in-studio and the full-length is in the works!

♫Makin' a soundtrack for another planet to hear♫" on Episode060 - Silver Lining which features brand new sounds from John Grant, Indians, Veronica Falls, Gold and Youth, Little Boots, Mudhoney, Dungeonesse, AM and Shawn Lee, Smith Westerns, Alpine, Guards, Alice Russell, Crankshaft and The Gear Grinders, Hiatus Kaiyote and Shake Some Action...

Episode060: MP3/Feed\Archive

Previous: Episode059 - Free At Dawn

****************************************
♬Liner Notes♬: Over half of our bands this week are making return visits to PUTV like Mudhoney, Alpine, Veronica Falls, Indians and more + new music from first timers Smith Westerns, Dungeonesse, Shake Some Action! and much more... Now let's Pump Up Tha Volume!

John Grant
"GMF"
'Pale Green Ghosts'
Partisan, 2013
Note: Last heard back on Episode048, we begin Episode060 with more new music from former Czars frontman's collabo with Biggi Veira of Gus Gus. The Guardian says, "it's undoubtedly a darker and harsher-sounding album than its predecessor. Some of the soft-rock lushness...has been stripped away and replaced by sparse electronics and occasionally rather ominous-sounding string arrangements..."
(More Info)

Indians
"Lips Lips Lips"
'Somewhere Else'
4AD, 2013
Note: Last heard on Episode043 and Episode047, Indians, the Norwegian nom de band of Søren Løkke is back with another track. The BBC says, "Somewhere Else certainly reveals itself slowly, but persist and there’s real beauty to be found here. Understated and unhurried, it showcases an artist whose star isn’t rapidly ascending towards the stratosphere of indie’s most celebrated. But track Søren’s continuing course starting now, as there’s potential in these quietly confident compositions, enough at least to soundtrack a handful of escapist dreams while snow drifts block one’s return to icy reality."
(More Info)

Veronica Falls
"My Heart Beats"
'Waiting for Something to Happen'
Bella Union/Slumberland, 2013
Note: We heard from this English quartet on Episode046, now they're back with more. Back in January, the Guardian gushed over the album. "Talk about stepping up. Rack one's brains and it's still a struggle to come up with hard to think of an album of indiepop – in the most purist sense of the term – anywhere near as good as the second from Veronica Falls... confident songwriting, and a sure grasp of how to make the limited dynamics of this music work their hardest."
(More Info)

Gold and Youth
"Jewel"
'Beyond Wilderness'
Arts & Crafts, 2013
Note: We heard Gold and Youth waay back on Episode006 with their track "Time To Kill" and now they're back with a new full-length record about which Vice's Noisey blog says, "their industrial, ethereal single "Jewel" as an appetizer...of the arresting electro quartet's debut full-length, Beyond Wilderness, loaded with hearty choruses, tantalizing pop hooks, and mouth-watering weaving melodies."
(More Info)

Little Boots
"Broken Record"
'Nocturnes'
On Repeat, 2013
Note: The Guardian says, "Pop can be a tough old game sometimes. Little Boots, aka Victoria Hesketh, may have topped the BBC Sound of 2009 poll and enjoyed both a top five album (Hands) and single (the RedOne-produced Remedy), but even these successes couldn't stop her being dropped by Atlantic. According to Hesketh, the label was constantly putting her with various songwriters to chase a hit and then changing its mind about what it wanted."
(More Info)

Mudhoney
"Slipping Away"
'Vanishing Point'
Sub Pop, 2013
Note: We last heard from the Seattle legends' ninth album back on Episode055. The Quietus says, "Time was that you'd hardly expect Mudhoney to last until the end of the year, yet here they are, these fine purveyors of snot-nosed garage rock, about to celebrate their quarter of a century. Of all the bands to have emerged from the Pacific Northwest at the arse end of the 80s who, in all seriousness, would have bet on Mudhoney being the ones to have made it so far?"
(More Info)

Dungeonesse
"Shucks"
'Dungeonesse'
Secretly Canadian, 2013
Note: The Charm City duo (that's Baltimore to you) hope you like the words "baby" and "love". Pitchfork says, ""Something that Jon and I talk about a lot is the idea of reclaiming pop music," Wye Oak singer/guitarist Jenn Wasner said as an introduction to their new electro-pop duo Dungeonesse. “Placing it squarely in the hands of, I dunno, say, a couple of regular nerds from Baltimore.” (Jon Ehrens is of the Baltimore band White Life.)"
(More Info)

AM and Shawn Lee
"Replay"
'La Musique Numérique'
Park The Van, 2013
Note: Last heard on Episode056, the AM and Shawn Lee collab returns to PUTV. Soundcheck says, "It’s hard to believe that the electro soul duo, AM and Shawn Lee, never once stepped foot in the same studio while recording their upcoming album, La Musique Numerique. That’s because the second full length record from the team of LA-based soul singer and songwriter AM and the London-based electronic musician Shawn Lee is a seamless collaboration: hooky, infectious and seductive."
(More Info)

Smith Westerns
"Varsity"
'Soft Will'
Mom + Pop, 2013
Note: Has It Leaked? has got the deets, "Chicago’s Smith Westerns are back with the follow-up to their 2011 LP Dye It Blonde. On June 11, they’ll release Soft Will, which is out via their new label Mom + Pop. “Varsity” is their first released single. The album was recorded with producer Chris Coady, who also worked on Dye It Blonde (as well as albums by Beach House, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and TV on the Radio), at Sonic Ranch in El Paso, Texas."
(More Info)

Alpine
"Gasoline"
'A Is for Alpine'
Ivy League, 2013
Note: Listen Before You Buy says this song "utilizes a sharp, effervescent riff, above a low, brash synth line that lays thick chunks of musical meat on the bones of one of the album’s first singles. These numbers are excellent and being so, make good on the promise the EP spoke of, while emphasizing the rest of the record’s inability to reach the same heights." We last heard Melbourne's Alpine on Episode004 and Episode050.
(More Info)

Guards
"Silver Lining"
'In Guards We Trust'
Black Bell, 2013
Note: The newish New York band has been teasing these tracks for months, but now the new album is out and Drowned In Sound says that "within two tracks [it] sounded like the perfect soundtrack to an idealised summer that we’re probably never going to get."
(More Info)

Alice Russell
"Twin Peaks"
'To Dust'
Differ-ant/Tru Thoughts, 2013
Note: Making her third appearance on PUTV after Episode008 and Episode046, the UK songstress returns with another track off her latest full-length. Pop Matters says, "There is currently a plethora of female vocalists tearing up the UK, and indeed international, music scenes... What is surprising is that the magnificent Alice Russell has failed to break into the top tier of songwriters and performers. To Dust is her fifth solo album in a little over a decade but in this time she has had some notable collaborations with A leaguers such as David Byrne and the Roots..."
(More Info)

Crankshaft and The Gear Grinders
"Boomtown"
'What You Gonna Do?'
self-released, 2013
Note: "Crankshaft has been pounding the pavement since 2008, developing his own "pork neck" style along the way. A sound heavily rooted in rock 'n' roll, blues, country, swing, and surf that "could not have been imagined prior to the early punk scene," as described by Dig In Magazine."
(More Info)

Hiatus Kaiyote
"Nakamarra"
'Tawk Tomahawk' EP
self-released, 2013
Note: Stereogum says, "Australia’s Hiatus Kaiyote seem like they could serve as the soundtrack to pretty much anything — they blend what sounds like the score of a futuristic western with the daily grind of urban life. The band went on their first-ever U.S. tour last month, playing SXSW showcases, Manhattan’s Le Poisson Rouge, and a guest performance during Questlove’s weekly DJ set at the Brooklyn Bowl."
(More Info)

Shake Some Action!
"The Girl With The Sun In Her Eyes"
'Full Fathom Five'
self-released, 2013
Note: This week's Pacific Northwest closer is the infectious Seattle quartet with an exclamation point in their name! Song source KEXP says this song "roars, feeling impossible to halt. It is a power-pop composition with ringing Rickenbacker guitar, driving bass and enough energy to get a Seattleite out of his chair and movin’."

Sun, 2013-05-19 15:53

♫Makin' a soundtrack for another planet to hear♫" on Episode059 - Free At Dawn which features brand new sounds from Deerhunter, Los Amigos Invisibles, Still Corners, Savages, Neon Neon, Small Black, She and Him, Cecile McLoren Savant, youryoungbody, Ex Cops, Freedom Fry, Crimes, Inc and Kithkin...

Episode059: MP3/Feed\Archive

Previous: Episode058 - Future Hunter

****************************************
♬Liner Notes♬: Welcome back to another eclectic blast of new sounds! This week rocks some Savages, Ex Cops, She And Him, Neon Neon and much more... Let's kick it off with new Deerhunter and Pump Up Tha Volume!

Deerhunter
"Back To The Middle"
'Monomania'
4AD, 2013
Note: We begin this week with the hotly anticipated new record from Georgia's Deerhunter, and as the Guardian says, "At this point, complaining about any of Bradford Cox's musical choices seems pointless: he does what he wants, and if you don't like it, you can go and listen to something else. You might as well suggest that oranges are all very well, but they'd be a whole lot better if they were peaches. Nevertheless, six albums into Deerhunter's career, Bradford Cox's decision to embrace ultra-low fidelity seems perverse."
(More Info)

Los Amigos Invisibles
"La Que Me Gusta"
'Repeat After Me'
Nacional, 2013
Note: "In the early 1990s in Venezuela, a group of young musicians decided to compose and play music unlike any thing they heard in the clubs of Caracas... Amazingly, the original line up is unchanged over their twenty years of playing together. With an enormous Latin fan base they've garnered numerous award nominations and received a couple of Latin Grammys. "Repeat After Me" is their seventh CD release and true to form is choc a bloc with absolutely great tracks."
(More Info)

Still Corners
"Fireflies"
'Strange Pleasures'
Sub Pop, 2013
Note: "While Still Corners first made a name for themselves with their 2012 shoegaze-inspired album, Creatures of an Hour, their sophomore album, Strange Pleasures, has moved the London-based group, now a duo, into 80s synth pop - but not the neon colored variety. The new album is like a clear dream about past love, cinematic and endlessly absorbing."
(More Info)

Savages
"She Will"
'Silence Yourself'
Matador, 2013
Note: We last heard a single from this London quartet on Episode042, but now they're back for the attack! "In theory then, debut album ‘Silence Yourself’ is flawless. Just see its monochrome sleeve – even their eyebrows look deeply important. The studied angular riffs, motorik beats and flair for tension-and-release form a confrontational soundtrack to urban friction. Every distorted note sounds under control. Savages could manipulate the screech of fingernails running down a chalkboard and make it sound melodic."
(More Info)

Neon Neon
"Mid Century Modern Nightmare"
'Praxis Makes Perfect'
Lex, 2013
Note: "Shortly after the release of Neon Neon's Mercury prize-nominated 2008 debut album Stainless Style – a brilliantly catchy, 1980s-indebted rumination on the life of roguish automobile engineer John DeLorean – Gruff Rhys had this to say about a potential followup to the BBC. "I don't know about making another Neon Neon album because it was quite a specific record about DeLorean's life story. If we did something in the future it would have to be something different." Five years later and Rhys and his production foil Boom Bip have finally announced the followup, the brilliantly-titled Praxis Makes Perfect, which is, of course, a musical biography of the controversial Italian leftwing political activist and book publisher, Giangiacomo Feltrinelli. One of the album's most political statements comes in the shape of the squelchy, mischievously upbeat Mid Century Modern Nightmare, premiered here, which features Asia Argento reading out extracts from a call-to-arms that Feltrinelli broadcast in Genoa in 1970, using a pirate transmitter wired up to his Fiat car."
(More Info)

Small Black
"Free At Dawn"
'Limits of Desire'
Jagjaguwar, 2013
Note: "“Free At Dawn” is a fresh reintroduction for Small Black, giving us a clear and thriving picture of their present chapter as a band. Gone is all of the noise and reverb of New Chain... Limits of Desire is sure to thrill as well as to challenge listeners to a more serious emotional and spiritual encounter with Small Black’s work."
(More Info)

She and Him
"Never Wanted Your Love"
'Volume 3'
Merge, 2013
Note: Death and Taxes says, "“Volume 3″ is a totally solid album, leagues better than the shrill (sorry) and oddly mastered (not sorry) “Volume 2″... “Volume 3″ legitmately sounds like the Patsy Cline / doo-wop sound that she’s been striving for all along – Zooey sounds free here – and it makes it work, it makes it click, and it makes for a great album... M. Ward, though, steps a little more to the center of the stage this time around, and it may just be exactly what She & Him needed all along – someone to bounce off of. It’s a much more different outing for both of them."
(More Info)

Cécile McLorin Salvant
"St. Louis Gal"
'Womanchild'
Mack Avenue, 2013
Note: The Old Gray Lady says, "THE jazz singer Cécile McLorin Salvant, who recently turned 23 and is still mostly unknown to jazz audiences, though not for much longer... Her voice clamps into each song, performing careful variations on pitch, stretching words but generally not scatting; her face conveys meaning, representing sorrow or serenity like a silent-movie actor. "
(More Info)

youryoungbody
"Sterile"
'Kurokabi' EP
self-released, 2013
Note: Song source KEXP says, "Known for eerie electronic music, Seattle duo youryoungbody has recently released their debut album, Kurokabi, which, like their two previous EP’s, USER and Mask, is forceful in its musical subtlety and ubiquity."
(More Info)

Ex Cops
"Nico Beast"
'True Hallucinations'
Fat Possum, 2013
Note: Pretty Much Amazing says, "Throughout True Hallucinations, the debut from this Brooklyn duo, Harding and Bruun have proven themselves adept at creating infectious indie pop songs. Their songs are not only immediately appealing, but fluent in the indie pop and dream pop classics, and do their best to imitate their influences. The influences are diverse enough to make True Hallucinations worth exploring..."
(More Info)

Freedom Fry
"Friends + Enemies"
'Friends + Enemies' EP
self-released, 2013
Note: Song source KEXP says, "Although they’re based in Los Angeles, Freedom Fry is comprised of New York City’s Bruce Driscoll and Paris’ Marie Seyrat, a pair that combine both of their home cities’ sleekest musical traits... Rolling with a DFA-style drum and bass pattern, “Friends + Enemies” squares Driscoll and Seyrat against one another to create a track filled with positive tension."
(More Info)

Crimes
"Cloud Creep"
'Thin Sunlight'
self-released, 2013
Note: Reviler says this Minneapolis band's new record "pulls off a difficult task. It is a reverb soaked musical amalgamation, pulling together sounds from surf, garage and pop influences under one well manicured roof."
(More Info)

Inc
"Lifetime"
'No World'
4AD, 2013
Note: Fact Magazine says the Aged brothers debut "is a luscious distillation of a range of R&B and soul: everything from quiet storm balladry to the sensual grooves of the Aaliyah / Timbaland catalog, but with a decidedly modern edge that feels more immediate than similarly influenced artists like How To Dress Well and the xx. The album is said to be “rooted in the brothers’ experiences” as session musicians for the likes of Pharrell, 50 Cent, and Raphael Saadiq."
(More Info)

Kithkin
"Fallen Giants" single
self-released, 2013
Note: Our Pacific Northwest closer this week is more than a band, they're a self-described "Cascadian youth tribe"! This song "resonates with the kind of epic presence that’s usually only found during the closing titles of Peter Jackson films. As a piercing organ shines through the thick, pounding wave of drums, the song tells a majestic and sometimes odd...tale of starting anew."

@PumpUpThaVolume: #Episode058 - #FutureHunter

Sun, 2013-05-12 04:10
♫Makin' a soundtrack for another planet to hear♫" on @PumpUpThaVolume! Episode058 - Future Hunter was recorded at the home studios of MediaMonarchy.com and features brand new #SongOfTheDay sounds from Mikal Cronin, Leisure Society, Kingsbury Manx, Carmen Villain, Ludovico Einaudi, Postal Service, Child Of Lov, Thee Oh Sees, Jonny Fritz, Steve Mason, Born Ruffians, VANDAAM, Chrysta Bell and Stone Gossard... because it can't be news and politics all the time!

Episode058: MP3/Feed\Archive

Previous: Episode057 - The Beauty Surrounds
****************************************
♬Liner Notes♬: Another genre-spanning episode with Thee Oh Sees, Steve Mason, Child of Lov, Postal Service and much more... Indie rock to classical, country to electropop - we are "Future Hunter"s!

Mikal Cronin
"Weight"
'MCII'
Merge, 2013
Note: For starters, Pitchfork says, "MCII is also his most fully realized, beautifully arranged, and well-crafted work to date. Since he's spent the past year shredding for the masses in the Ty Segall Band, it's easy to forget that he recently earned his B.F.A. in Music and learned how to compose for different instruments."
(More Info)

Leisure Society
"A Softer Voice Takes Longer Hearing"
'Alone Aboard the Ark'
Full Time Hobby, 2013
Note: "As a fan of UK's The Leisure Society, Ray Davies' of The Kinks invited the band to record their album at his Konk Studios. Today's Top Tune gives us an idea of the band's expansive electro-pop sound..."
(More Info)

Kingsbury Manx
"Future Hunter"
'Bronze Age'
Odessa, 2013
Note: Their local North Carolina Indy Week says this band's sixth record is "a very sophisticated and subtle band hiding their involved machinations behind pop music meant to sound, once again, elegant and elementary."
(More Info)

Carmen Villain
"Lifeissin"
'Sleeper'
Smalltown Supersound, 2013
Note: "Let's get this out of the way first - Carmen Villain used to be a very successful model. Her face has appeared on the covers of Vogue and Nylon, and high profile cosmetic ad campaigns. It turns out Carmen Hillestad (Carmen Villain) has been a spy in the house of fashion. Behind the scenes, she was channeling her frustrations into a set of songs with a defiantly DIY underground free-rock sound."
(More Info)

Ludovico Einaudi
"Brothers"
'In A Time Lapse'
Ponderosa, 2013
Note: "No longer do small snippets of Einaudi do his music justice; the natural crescendos and decrescendos, the accelerandos and the ritardandos, lend themselves to a fuller experience, one better suited for soundtracks than the latest NBA commercial. At the least, In a Time Lapse is a release that will undoubtedly solidify Einaudi’s place as one of the greatest pianists and composers of our era."
(More Info)

Postal Service
"A Tattered Line of String"
'Give Up' (Deluxe 10th Anniversary Edition)
Sub Pop, 2013
Note: For the second week we get some Postal Service, but THIS time it's a 'new' track from the deluxe edition of the now legendary album. "A much-anticipated sophomore album was planned but never completed, so fans will have to make do with the double-disc Deluxe 10th Anniversary Edition, which adds two new songs: the pulsing and danceable “Turn Around” and “A Tattered Line of String.” This tremendously influential work is Sub Pop's second-bestselling album behind Nirvana's “Bleach,” and listening to it again tells the reason why."
(More Info)

Child Of Lov
"Heal"
'Child Of Lov'
Domino, 2013
Note: "Results may vary, but you know that whatever Damon Albarn associates himself with will never be dull. In the words of The Mighty Boosh’s Howard Moon, when Damon sees a boundary, he eats a boundary. So when it was announced that Blur’s musical polymath would produce and guest on Dutch newcomer The Child Of Lov’s debut, the coupling seemed perfect... on the stabbing funk of ‘Heal’, with Williams falsetto-ing over grimy synths and layered backing vocals"
(More Info)

Thee Oh Sees
"Toe Cutter-Thumb Buster"
'Floating Coffin'
Castle Face, 2013
Note: Making their landmark fourth appearance on PUTV - and for the second week in a row - we get more from the new album that's topping college charts. "John Dwyer and his project, Thee Oh Sees, has been wonderfully impossible to pin down over 15 albums. There have always been different experiments with pop-folk and psychedelia and all kinds of fuzzy, eccentric noise play. But with last year’s Putrifiers II, the band found a concise mix of all its wide sounds... Floating Coffin both extends and distorts that progression. It’s another tense, potent dose of rocking jangle, but it’s also darker than its predecessor and more interested in tonal and mood shifts mid-song."
(More Info)

Jonny Fritz
"Goodbye Summer"
'Dad Country'
ATO, 2013
Note: "Dad Country is the first release under the name of Jonny Fritz. Dad Country is a good title direct for the songs collected on the album. Known as a musical entity under the heading Jonny Corndawg since his late teens, the real Mr. Fritz is using the name that he used to sign his ATO Records deal."
(More Info)

Steve Mason
"Seen It All Before"
'Monkey Minds in the Devil's Time'
Domino/Double Six, 2013
Note: "Steve Mason is a man who spends much time thinking about the world around him and the effect it has on himself and society at large. Perhaps he is welcoming us into a corner of his mind as Monkey Minds in the Devil's Time -- his third album under his own name -- begins."
(More Info)

Born Ruffians
"Needle"
'Birthmarks'
Yep Roc, 2013
Note: "This album follows a simple idea: grow or die. Birthmarks is, largely, the sound of the [Canadian four piece] learning how to gracefully leave behind pre-pubescent tomfoolery in favor of meatier themes and weightier production."
(More Info)

VANDAAM
"Electron Oceans"
'VANDAAM' EP
self-released, 2013
Note: "It was a side project... Now it’s transitioned into a trio based here in the Twin Cities with Adept and Lady Midnight joining in on the beat-making process... The two initial demos were fascinating enough, but VANDAAM’s current release is a gorgeous, down-tempo and matured affair."
(More Info)

Chrysta Bell
"Right Down to You"
'This Train'
La Rose Noire, 2011
Note: "Chanteuse Chrysta Bell has joined forces with her close friend David Lynch to produce their first album together; a bewitching and impassioned alliance. David Lynch’s dark and dreamy idiosyncrasies are unmistakable and Chrysta Bell oozes aloofness, a Monroe-esque sex appeal. The result is a hauntingly beautiful collaboration."
(More Info)

Stone Gossard
"I Need Something Different"
'Moonlander'
Monkeywrench, 2013
Note: And finally, our Pacific Northwest closer this week "is a man who needs no introduction. As the guitar player in four influential Seattle bands - Brad, Green River, Mother Love Bone, and Pearl Jam (plus the short-lived Temple of the Dog)... Centered around a dirty, punk blues guitar sound, “I Need Something Different” finds Gossard walking down new musical paths while lyrically commenting on his new pursuits."

Sun, 2013-05-05 04:04
♫Makin' a soundtrack for another planet to hear♫" on @PumpUpThaVolume! Episode057 - The Beauty Surrounds was recorded at the home studios of MediaMonarchy.com and features brand new #SongOfTheDay sounds from Houses, Stornoway, Thee Oh Sees, The Uncluded, Sabina, Caveman, Postal Service, Shout Out Louds, Laura Mvula, Besnard Lakes, On An On, Raul y Mexia and Dead Ship Sailing... because it can't be news and politics all the time!

Episode057: MP3/Feed\Archive

****************************************
♬Liner Notes♬: We take you all around the world on this week's PUTV with exciting new sounds from the Shout Out Louds, Laura Mvula, Besnard Lakes and Houses + a Postal Service 'classic', Thee Oh Sees, Uncluded and much more!

Houses
"The Beauty Surrounds"
'A Quiet Darkness'
Downtown, 2013
Note: For starters, Stereogum says, "Chicago band Houses describes their interests on Facebook in four words: “Sustainable living, being alone.” Despite their isolationist tendencies, the band released a new video today for their single “The Beauty Surrounds,” off of their...third album A Quiet Darkness... A tale of heartbreak and loneliness set in the desert, “The Beauty Surrounds” video is as aesthetically beautiful as the story is depressing."
(More Info)

Stornoway
"Knock Me on the Head"
'Tales from Terra Firma'
4AD, 2013
Note: Song source KCRW says, "Frontman Brian Briggs describes Stornaway's new recording, Tales from Terra Firma, as "as an album full of stories about rites of passage". From the sound of Today's Top Tune, "Knock Me on the Head,” the lessons haven't been easy."
(More Info)

Thee Oh Sees
"I Come From The Mountain"
'Floating Coffin'
Castle Face, 2013
Note: Song source KEXP says, "Led by singer/guitarist John Dwyer, Thee Oh Sees’ frenetic take on lo-fi, psych, and garage rock is only amplified by the band’s tireless touring and recording schedule... Part-fuzz, part-adrenaline, all garage-rock fury, “I Come From The Mountain” sounds like a swirling, rapid-fire rocker that emerged suddenly from Dwyer’s Bay Area dungeon." I love that PUTV has already been going long enough to have some bands return with new work! We heard from Thee Oh Sees back on Episode025 and Episode028.
(More Info)

The Uncluded
"Delicate Cycle"
'Hokey Fright'
Rhymesayers, 2013
Note: "Aesop Rock and Kimya Dawson are not strangers. Dawson appeared on Aesop’s 2012 album Skelethon. Aesop made several appearances on Dawson’s 2011 album Thunder Thighs. The duo have formed a band: The Uncluded. Their debut album is called Hokey Fright, and it’s out May 7 via Rhymesayers."
(More Info)

Sabina
"Tabarly" single
unknown, 2013
Note: Song source KCRW says, "Sabina Sciubba is best known as the sultry voice of Brazilian Girls and Today's Top Tune is an exclusive preview from her new solo project about a noted French yachtsman, Eric Tabarly. It's simply called "Tabarly."" And that's about all I can find on this, obviously, newly announced album.
(More Info)

Caveman
"In The City"
'Caveman'
Fat Possum, 2013
Note: "Carrying aesthetics of shoegaze and Northwestern indie folk, “In The City” isn’t pretentious, academic, or any other “Brooklyn band”-worthy descriptor."
(More Info)

Postal Service
"Sleeping In"
'Give Up'
Sub Pop, 2013
Note: The 10th anniversary press release about one of the biggest records of this century simply says, "You can spend all the time and money in the world trying to craft the perfect pop-music scenario, but sometimes the stars have to align all by themselves. Even though early on the members of The Postal Service jokingly referred to Such Great Heights as “the hit” on their debut album, Give Up, there’s no way anyone could have predicted the eventual impact made by a mail-order album designed in a pair of West Coast bedrooms."
(More Info)

Shout Out Louds
"Illusions"
'Optica'
Merge, 2013
Note: After referencing the seemingly timeless sound of the 80s, NPR says you could find a worse decade to mine for inspiration. "Which brings us around to Optica, the new fourth album by the Swedish band , and particularly its song "Illusions." Listening to it in 2013, it's as if someone traveled back in time 30 years and slipped The Thompson Twins the biggest hit of their career, and now a young band is tapping into our shared nostalgia by rehashing a hit that's somehow been lodged in our memory banks all along. "Illusions" may be brand-new, but it already feels eternal."
(More Info)

Laura Mvula
"Sing to the Moon"
'Sing to the Moon'
RCA, 2013
Note: RTE says, "It's pronounced mmm-voola and rarely has onomatopoeia made more sense. This 25-year-old graduate of the Birmingham Conservatoire with a degree in composition has a spookily sensuous voice and the lush cinematic arrangements to match on her seductive debut. She's already been labelled gospeldelia, called "Nina Simone sings the Beach Boys", and won comparisons with sci-fi pop goddess Janelle Monáe."
(More Info)

Besnard Lakes
"People of the Sticks"
'Until In Excess, Imperceptible UFO'
Jagjaguwar, 2013
Note: Song source KEXP says, "their most recent album, strays from the traditional verse and chorus song structure. “People of the Sticks” undoubtedly showcases this design and has a little bit of everything that makes these four artists such an intriguing group. It’s a refreshing pop ballad that fills the void left by today’s soulless Top 40 music."
(More Info)

On An On
"The Hunter"
'Give In'
City Slang, 2013
Note: Earmilk says this Chicago band is "Picking up where “Ghosts” left off, ON AN ON return with “The Hunter”, the second single to be lifted from their forthcoming Give In long player. Built around a stuttering, propulsive drumbeat, “The Hunter” quickly swells into a soaring, stadium-sized anthem..."
(More Info)

Raul y Mexia
"Las Escondidas"
'Arriba y Lejos'
Nacional, 2013
Note: And we can always get our world music fix from KCRW, who say, "Raul Y Mexia, sons of legendary Los Tigres del Norte vocalist and bassist Hernan Hernandez, just released their first single “Las Escondidas,” produced by Grammy-nominated producer Toy Selectah. These guys are part of the new generation of American Latinos living a bicultural, bilingual lifestyle, which is reflected in their music, with diverse influences from hip-hop and cumbia, Latin ballads and electronic dance music." They also got a writeup in the NYTimes!
(More Info)

Dead Ship Sailing
"Burn To Dust"
'Dead Ship Sailing'
self-released, 2013
Note: And finally, our Pacific Northwest closer this week is Seattle duo Dead Ship Sailing. Song source KEXP says, "Written in bursts during a series of evening-long, gun-to-your-head sessions, the duo’s debut album recalls a brooding, robotic take on the reverb-drenched allure of The Raveonettes or the wild fury of The Kills."

@PumpUpThaVolume: #Episode056 - #AnIvisibleLight

Sun, 2013-04-28 09:25
♫Makin' a soundtrack for another planet to hear♫" on @PumpUpThaVolume! Episode056 - An Invisible Light was recorded at the home studios of MediaMonarchy.com and features brand new #SongOfTheDay sounds from Bleached, Grynch & Budo, Natural Self, Keaton Henson, Elements of Life, AM & Shawn Lee, Lonely Wild, Andrew Wyatt, Wire, Andy Burrows, Dawes, Mikey and Matty, Har Mar Superstar, Josh Rouse and Jetman Jet Team... because it can't be news and politics all the time!

Episode056: MP3/Feed\Archive

Previous: Episode055 - Shine
****************************************
♬Liner Notes♬: This week we get the full 15 songs, five from each of our #SongOfTheDay sources! Young bands rub elbows with some exiting sounds from established artists as we feature the legendary Wire + Har Mar Superstar, The Lonely Wild, Josh Rouse, Dawes and so much more... Let's Pump Up Tha Volume!

Bleached
"Dead In Your Head"
'Ride Your Heart'
Dead Oceans, 2013
Note: And we begin with duo known as Bleached. Stereogum says, "We’ve already got the energetic “Next Stop” from Bleached’s upcoming album Ride Your Heart... Now, they’ve given us “Dead In Your Head,” another flavor of beach blanket bingo pop that may not be as raucous as the first single, but is just as apt for summer’s haze."
(More Info)

Grynch & Budo
"Treadin'" single
Fin, 2013
Note: Song source KEXP says, "Closing every verse with “I’m trying to get ahead still/I need to hop off of this treadmill” over Budo’s grinding beat, Grynch amply displays that he has the talent and drive to break onto a bigger stage, but as he notes in the song, he’s about one occasion away of being in the right place at the right time for the break he’s looking for. When it comes though, it will only solidify why Seattle has so many marquee names in hip-hop at the moment."
(More Info)

Natural Self
"An Invisible Light"
'Neon Hurts My Eyes'
Tru Thoughts, 2013
Note: "London producer and DJ Natural Self takes on the dual role of singer and songwriter on his latest project, Neon Hurts My Eyes. A favorite among our nighttime DJ's, his third album is full of dynamic beats and bright synths."
(More Info)

Keaton Henson
"You"
'Birthdays'
ANTI-, 2013
Note: NPR says, "The Keaton Henson who appears on the new album Birthdays is an avowed hermit with a profoundly broken heart. He also has one of the most beautiful voices I've heard. The 24 year-old singer from London, who says he rarely leaves his bedroom, bares his wrecked emotional remains..."
(More Info)

Elements of Life
"Canto Para Ochosi"
'Eclipse'
Fania, 2013
Note: AllMusic says, "[Louie] Vega's EOL is the first signing of a new artist by the legendary Fania Records in decades. While Latin rhythms and Nuyorican soul sounds are among those heard here, they are only elements in EOL's attack, which includes African and Brazilian rhythms, jazz, soul, R&B, gospel, and pop. Eclipse is exceptionally consistent over 17 tracks and 78 minutes."
(More Info)

AM & Shawn Lee
"Two Times"
'La Musique Numérique'
Park The Van, 2013
Note: Again, AllMusic says, "The follow-up to AM & Shawn Lee's superb 2011 debut, Celestial Electric, 2013's La Musique Numerique features more of the band's dance-oriented mix of electronic and organic pop music. Lee, a longtime electronic and percussion experimentalist, and AM, a singer/songwriter in the classic soft pop tradition of Paul Williams, are an unlikely duo."
(More Info)

Lonely Wild
"Everything You Need"
'The Sun As It Comes'
Ursa Major, 2013
Note: American Songwriter says, "With their debut album, The Lonely Wild set up camp somewhere between Bruce Springsteen and Ennio Morricone, occupying that rarely-visited place where mariachi horns, four-on-the-floor percussion, vocal harmonies and rafter-reaching rock & roll all intersect." We last heard from The Lonely Wild on Episode054.
(More Info)

Andrew Wyatt
"Cluster Subs"
'Desender'
Downtown, 2013
Note: Song source KCRW says, "Miike Snow's frontman Andrew Wyatt expands his sound on his solo debut, Descender, enlisting Prague's 75 piece Philharmonic Orchestra and a variety of friends."
(More Info)

Wire
"Love Bends"
'Change Becomes Us'
Pink Flag, 2013
Note: Spin says, "Like nearly everything about this long-running musical project (one hesitates to call it a band), the title of Wire's new album is simultaneously cheeky and flatly informative. Thirty-plus years into an assault on pop conventions, amid multiple sabbaticals and lineup fluctuations, these Class of '77 standouts have perfected a peculiar logic that alternately captivates and infuriates followers..."
(More Info)

Andy Burrows
"Keep On Moving On"
'Company'
Play It Again Sam, 2012
Note: Consequence of Sound says, "Andy Burrows may be better known as the ex-drummer of Razorlight and current seat holder with We Are Scientists, but he represents an altogether more unusual animal, the singer-songwriter drummer. Indeed, Burrows was co-writer on many of Razorlight’s tunes, including the UK #1 “America”, and has fashioned two solo records, a debut in aid of a local charity, and a second under the moniker of I Am Arrows. Company marks the third release for a largely unsung artist who nonetheless produces some effortlessly polished music."
(More Info)

Dawes
"From a Window Seat"
'Stories Don't End'
HUB, 2013
Note: Rolling Stone says, "After spending last summer on the road with Mumford & Sons, Dawes were getting anxious and restless. Constant touring behind their last album Nothing Is Wrong had exacerbated bandleader Taylor Goldsmith's fear of airplanes, but after taking a breath to gain perspective, he channeled his uneasiness into "From A Window Seat," a track rife with skittish drums and shady keyboard jabs."
(More Info)

Mikey and Matty
"Second Son"
'Harbor Island'
self-released, 2013
Note: Song source KEXP says, "Consisting of brothers Mike and Matt Gervais (also of Seattle pop outfit Curtains To You), Mikey and Matty’s music combines elements of ’70s folk and ’90s indie rock to form a slack-but-precise take on indie rock’s current folk resurgence."
(More Info)

Har Mar Superstar
"Lady, You Shot Me"
'Bye Bye 17'
Cult, 2013
Note: Again, AllMusic says, "Over the course of his tenure as Har Mar Superstar, Sean Tillmann has always looked backwards to R&B nasty-jam provocateurs like Prince for inspiration, rekindling the fire of the classic sex jam while his contemporaries were reviving garage rock. Bye Bye 17, however, finds the songwriter looking even further back, diving headfirst into classic R&B with an album that's more about soul than sleaze." At first glance, this seems like Har Mar's stab at Cee-Lo's 'Ladykiller'. I like it and bet that he wouldn't sanitize a "Fuck You" for some filthy lucre...
(More Info)

Josh Rouse
"Simple Pleasure"
'The Happiness Waltz'
Yep Roc, 2013
Note: Song source KCRW says, "Josh Rouse now has ten albums under his belt and has established himself as an artist dedicated to showcasing the bright side of all things. His new album, The Happiness Waltz, has a breezy feel that takes us back to the sound of AM radio of the late 70's."
(More Info)

Jetman Jet Team
"Cosmic Age"
'We Will Live the Space Age'
Saint Marie, 2013
Note: And finally, song source KEXP says, "Seattle’s Jetman Jet Team will invariably be compared to shoegaze legends My Bloody Valentine. The warped layers of bending guitars and dream-pop texture of Jetman Jet Team continue the aural exploration of MBV and 1990s sound-weavers Swervedriver and Ride. But rather than imitating their influences, Jetman Jet Team excel by using history to guide them towards crafting their own galactic noise pop. Lush in atmosphere, the 15 tracks on the debut album, We Will Live the Space Age, blissfully hover and soar into the clouds on dense, interstellar guitars and ethereal vocal melodies."

♬Liner Notes♬: It's gonna be a little lazy with the show notes this week due to an obviously busy week at my news radio regular job + but it's also Record Store Day 2013! (And I got to meet Dana Gould after The Simpsons Q&A panel at this weekend's Bridgetown Comedy Festival!) Don't let the bastards grind you down - enjoy life, love and music...That's why these recent episodes have had titles like "Let The Day Begin" or "Coast To Coast". This week's got new music from Mudhoney, Black Rebel, Charles Bradley, Cloud Cult and much more. Now let's Pump Up Tha Volume!

Young Man
"In A Sense"
'Beyond Was All Around Me'
Frenchkiss, 2013
Note: We begin with the Chicago band that Pretty Much Amazing says, "Beyond Was All Around Me is the third [album], and “In A Sense” is its first single. It’s been awesome to hear each record as it comes out, darker, more contemplative, and more representative of the band’s awesome live show than the last one – “In A Sense” is maybe the moodiest track we’ve heard from the band yet, almost like a lost Deerhunter track, with an underlying kraut-y groove beneath a gorgeous and vaguely unsettling sweep of guitar and synth."
(More Info)

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
"Hate the Taste"
'Specter At The Feast'
Vagrant, 2013
Note: Last heard as the title track for Episode052, this week we get more music from the new BRMC record. Song source KCRW says, "Rockin' roadsters Black Rebel Motorcycle Club deliver Specter at the Feast, a heartfelt album inspired by the loss of their mentor and father of front-man Robert Levon Been."
(More Info)

Cloud Cult
"Good Friend"
'Love'
Earthology, 2013
Note: Song source KEXP says, "Today’s featured song, “Good Friend,” is classic Cloud Cult, with vibrant rich orchestration, anthemic sing-along choruses and let’s-feel-good-in-this-often-shitty-world lyrics..."
(More Info)

Wild Belle
"Shine"
'Isles'
Columbia, 2013
Note: "Genre-bending siblings Natalie and Eliot Bergman create a potent mix on their noteworthy debut as Wild Belle. ["Shine"] captures their essence in a word, it's the Shine from their CD, Isles."
(More Info)

FaltyDL
"Straight & Arrow"
'Hardcourage'
Ninja Tune, 2013
Note: "Hardcourage' is the NYC-based Lustman's masterpiece: an electronic opus inspired by love and crafted with renewed intent and dedication. Lustman often makes mention of attempting to channel the music in his head, to allow it to pour forth direct from his subconscious. In 'Hardcourage' it seems he's succeeded. The music here feels incredibly natural, the songs taking the most perfect of shapes, their emotive rise and swell both subtle and immensely powerful."
(More Info)

Mudhoney
"I Like It Small"
'Vanishing Point'
Sub Pop, 2013
Note: "25 years in, Vanishing Point affirms that, even in an age where only the newest of the new can survive, Mudhoney still have plenty to say and more to offer. These are songs written from the rare vantage point of a band who went through the rock n' roll meat-grinder and not only lived to tell such a tale, they came out full of the wisdom and dark humor such a journey provides. Vanishing Point is filled with dread, psychoanalysis and Nuggets-on-fire riffs; the sort of uninhibited rock music that is harder and harder to locate these days. With Vanishing Point, Mudhoney makes it easy."
(More Info)

Phosphorescent
"Ride On/Right On"
'Muchacho'
Dead Oceans, 2013
Note: Paste Magazine says, "Ornery, insubordinate and proud, Houck isn’t the type to lock the front door and wallow in conventional heartbreak. Uncaged, “Ride On/ Right On” throttles into the city at night on Manzarek keys, loose tambourine and crank-oil licks, hopping the curb to slap palms with compañeros and offer a backseat ride to a rebound girl."
(More Info)

The Veils
"Through the Deep, Dark Wood"
'Time Goes, We Stay'
ArtistDirect, 2013
Note: Stereogum says, "The Veils will finally release their fourth studio album this spring and today they’ve unveiled the first single. “Through The Deep Dark Wood” is all thick bass, thunderous drums, and wailing hooks — the recipe for the kind of rock track that stitches itself to your brain and stays put. Check it out below."
(More Info)

Hanni El Khatib
"Can't Win 'Em All"
'Head in the Dirt'
Innovative Leisure, 2013
Note: "Head In The Dirt, produced by Dan Auerbach, is the second album by Hanni El Khatib, where he takes a lucky 11 songs and makes the entire history of rebel music something all his own. He's got cut-to-the-bone Rhythm 'n' Blues and over-cranked Stooges-style stompers. He's got bottomless Black Sabbath riff-outs and Dub-a-delic garageland rockers that call up the spirits of the Clash and the Equals both. By the end of Head In The Dirt, you'll realize that El Khatib actually made something out of everything." We also last heard Hanni on Episode052.
(More Info)

Little Green Cars
"Angel Owl"
'Absolute Zero'
Glassnote, 2013
Note: "2013 debut album from Irish indie-rock quintet" also contains the single we heard last year on Episode035.
(More Info)

Web Of Sunsets
