♬Liner Notes♬: It's Memorial Day weekend and, as Sasquatch rocks the Pacific Northwest, we're gonna rock some of the best new music this side of summer. Favorites like The Faint, Sean Lennon, Dolly Parton, Built To Spill and Mudhoney sizzle alongside Architecture In Helsinki, Caught A Ghost, Actual Wolf and much more!

The Faint
"Mental Radio"
'Doom Abuse'
SQE, 2014
Notes: "Before modern, synthy dance rock came into vogue, before dubstep, even before The Postal Service, teens looking for something to satisfy both their us-vs.-them, heartbroken moodiness and the need to dance like crazy people had the dark new wave of The Faint. The Faint made it cool for hipsters to dance in the late ’90s, and for that we thank them. 1999′s Blank-Wave Arcade and 2001′s Danse Macabre were indie dance night staples... There is a good chance that The Faint won’t be making many new fans from Doom Abuse. The lyrical content is the same paranoid, anti-establishment apocalypse they’ve been writing since Dance Macabre, and while the music is a shift back to the grime that was absent from Fasciinatiion, it’s still The Faint holding to their new wave revival." Fuckin' finally! After six long years, one of my favorite bands is back with a new full-length on a new label and I hope to be interviewing them when they come to town on May 31st! Stay tuned!
(@TheFaint)

Ghost Of A Saber Tooth Tiger
"Animals/Long Gone (Syd Barrett cover, live on KUTX)"
'Midnight Sun'
Chimera, 2014
Notes: "The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger is out to topple everyone’s expectations. The two-piece band has rather public identities to overcome: Sean Lennon is the only child of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, and his girlfriend Charlotte Kemp Muhl is a world-class model who was the youngest covergirl on Britain’s Harper’s Bazaar... In the trajectory of Sean Lennon’s solo career and The GOASTT’s six-year history, Midnight Sun is their going-electric moment. Sean Lennon’s subdued and minimalist solo music paved the way for The GOASTT’s initial albums to be acoustic and saccharine in what Kemp Muhl now describes as "nerdy folk music." This April's album is oh-so-different. Inherited Beatlesque psychedelica meshes with modern-day indie à la Tame Impala and Deerhunter." Whoa, with this live Syd Barrett cover, Sean Lennon continually proves that he's the real creative legacy of his father. (Damn, they're in town tonight with Syd Arthur opening!)
(@WeAreTheGoaSTT)

Caught A Ghost
"No Sugar In My Coffee"
'Human Nature'
+1 Records, 2014
Notes: "Helmed by singer/songwriter/producer Jesse Nolan, Caught A Ghost also features drummer Stephen Edelstein and singer/percussionist Tessa Thompson, who has won acclaim for her acting roles in such TV series as "Veronica Mars," "Copper," and the upcoming Dear White People, which won The Jury Prize at Sundance this year. For its live show, the band morphs into an eight-piece outfit that includes a full horn section and much dancing." We heard "Sleeping At Night" from the East LA band back on Episode042.
(@CaughtAGhost)

Mimicking Birds
"Bloodlines"
'Eons'
Glacial Pace, 2014
Notes: "Way back in 2010, we posted “New Doomsdays,” a gorgeously fragile ballad from Nate Lacy’s ethereal roots-rock band Mimicking Birds. The Portland band is back with a new album called Eons this May, again via Isaac Brock’s Glacial Pace label, but lead single “Bloodlines” finds Lacy further distinguishing his voice from Brock’s feral drawl. The gently trembling vocal here will resonate with fans of My Morning Jacket and Phosphorescent; it sounds like a beam of light against the band’s beautiful psych spirals."
(@MimickingBirds)

Tele Novella
"Trouble In Paradise" single
American Laundromat, 2014
Notes: "Psych-pop foursome Tele Novella is known for powerful vocals complemented by dream-like vibes, and it seems their [latest] 7” won’t stray too far from the abstract charm that propelled them onto playlists and record players with their recent release Don’t Be A Stranger." The Austin band may be small, but their sound and their profile is growing.
(@Tele_Novella)

Architecture in Helsinki
"I Might Survive"
'NOW + 4EVA'
Casual Workout, 2014
Notes: "Aussie indie-pop outfit Architecture in Helsinki...release their new album, the peppily-titled NOW + 4EVA... The band’s first since 2011′s Moment Bends, the 11-track effort was co-produced by Francois Tetaz (Gotye) and mixed by Damian Taylor (Arcade Fire, The Killers)... the five-piece have broken off their latest single “I Might Survive”. While it doesn’t sound quite as determined as Gloria Gaynor’s own survival anthem, the technicolor synth-pop cut does borrow some of Gaynor’s disco chic and glitz."
(@AiHmusic)

Family Crest
"Beneath the Brine"
'Beneath the Brine'
Tender Loving Empire, 2014
Notes: "The Family Crest began in 2009 as a creative outlet for friends Liam McCormick and John Seeterlin, but in the years since, it's morphed into something far larger. The independent San Francisco band is built around a core of seven, but boasts a sprawling "extended family" of over 400 people who have participated in some capacity -- everyone from conservatory-trained musicians to friends and fans “who just sing in the shower,” says McCormick, the mastermind behind the collective... With Beneath The Brine, The Family Crest’s Kickstarter-funded full-length, McCormick and company capture practically every type of instrument -- trumpets, French horn and trombone trios, pedal steel and vibraphone, choirs and and string quartets." As I recently noted, Tender Loving Empire is the best record label/toy store out there!
(@TheFamilyCrest)

Dolly Parton
"Blue Smoke"
'Blue Smoke'
Dolly/Sony, 2014
Notes: Dolly herself says, ""One of the reasons I called it 'Blue Smoke' is that it has a tinge of the bluegrass of the Smoky Mountains — a mountain music flavor. The 'Blue Smoke' song is about a heartbreak train called Blue Smoke." It's built on a spirited shuffle rhythm, rootsy instrumentation including guitar, fiddle and dobro and an instant sing-along chorus with her message of departure to an unfaithful love..." I streamed the whole album the other day and it reminded me, in a way, of Loretta Lynn's 'Van Lear Rose'. Aside from some covers (the great "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" from Dylan and the silly "Lay Your Hands On Me" from Bon Jovi) and the fact that 'Blue Smoke' isn't a Jack White-produced rager (nor should it be), the album has the heartwarming (duets with Kenny Rogers and Willie Nelson?!) and even bittersweet feel of a legend saying goodnight like Lynn did on her last album.
(@DollyParton)

Sturgill Simpson
"A Little Light"
'Metamodern Sounds in Country Music'
High Top Mountain, 2014
Notes: "Sturgill Simpson’s sophomore record is downright disorienting... Even the title — Metamodern Sounds in Country Music — feels ripped from the ’70s, when country artists like Willie Nelson, Gram Parsons and Jessi Colter brazenly upended the Nashville formula, unafraid of getting weird or getting raw... The spirit of the good old days is felt most strongly in the too-brief A Little Light, which swings even as it uplifts."
(@SturgillSimpson)

Actual Wolf
"Thinking Of You" (Live on The Current)
'Beer EP'
MPR/Schell, 2014
Notes: "The Current Beer EP features six songs recorded at The Current studios (or at First Avenue) from some of our favorite artists... [featuring] Cactus Blossom...The 4onthefloor...Har Mar Superstar...Caroline Smith...[and]...Frankie Lee" An awesome non-commercial radio station teaming up with a local, craft beer? I'll have another, please! And you can download the EP for free here.
(@ActualWolf)

HTRK
"Blue Sunshine"
'Psychic 9-5 Club'
Ghostly, 2014
Notes: "On April 1, HTRK return[ed] with their first proper album as a duo. The [Sydney] Australian group — whose name is pronounced "Hate Rock" — suffered a massive blow during the recording of 2011's Work (Work Work), when founding member Sean Stewart was found dead in his home. But on the forthcoming Psychic 9-5 Club, Jonnine Standish and Nigel Yang create a work that, according to label Ghostly, "looks back on a time of sadness and struggle, and within that struggle they find hope and humor and love." A song like "Blue Sunshine," heard below, seems to exemplify that, wrapping sensual Sade-like vocals inside a black blanket of moody bass, terse atmosphere, and skittering percussion. "Healthy dose of inner peace," Standish coos out with a narcotic stickiness, "Blue rays.""
(@HTRK_)

Young Magic
"Fall In"
'Breathing Statues'
Carpark, 2014
Notes: "Breathing Statues found [Brooklyn's] Young Magic's lineup pared down to the duo of Isaac Emmanuel and Melati Malay, but the album sounds far bigger and more polished than their [2012] debut, Melt... "
(@ItsYoungMagic)

Built To Spill
"Jokerman" (Bob Dylan cover)
'Bob Dylan In The 80s: Volume One'
ATO, 2014
Notes: "In a couple of months, the compilation Bob Dylan In The 80s: Volume One will pay tribute to the most neglected period in Robert Zimmerman’s career. (This is, of course, a relative thing; the Reagan-era version of Bob Dylan still gave us “Most Of The Time” and one fifth of “Handle With Care.”) The comp, put together by producers Jesse Lauter and Sean O’Brien, is set to feature people like Deer Tick, Elvis Perkins, Reggie Watts, and, in an improbable collaboration, Gene Ween and Slash. For their contribution, Built To Spill have done a characteristically ragged and beautiful take on “Jokerman,” a weird half-reggae song from Dylan’s 1983 album Infidels, which Dire Straits’ Mark Knopfler co-produced."
(@OfficialBTS)

Mudhoney
"Touch Me I'm Sick"
'Mudhoney On Top! KEXP Presents Mudhoney Live on Top of the Space Needle'
Sub Pop, 2014
Notes: "Although Seattle’s rich musical history has given it plenty of elder statesmen, very few are still kicking as hard as Mudhoney. As their latest album, 2013′s Vanishing Point, proves, [they] remain as energetic and furious as ever, raging against douchebags, large venues, and, uh, chardonnay with the same reckless abandon that fueled their initial rise to local notoriety. As part of their longtime label Sub Pop’s Silver Jubilee celebration, KEXP broadcast the quartet live from the top of the Space Needle and recently joined with Sub Pop to release that performance on vinyl for Record Store Day 2014. When the band actually finished setting up 605 feet above ground, they wasted no time kicking off their set with [1988's] “Touch Me I’m Sick”." Let's blow this Memorial Day weekend episode out with the first, best, loudest and snottiest track from the grunge-era, and it still scorches! (I remember the first time I heard this song, I thought "Holy s%$#!! Why is Nirvana the bigger band?!")
(@_Mudhoney)

****************************************
♬Liner Notes♬: Since I went to Los Angeles last weekend to see Morrissey and Tom Jones (and great old friends), we're putting together a super-sized episode and it's gonna be a goodie. We've got a lot of return appearances from artists like Eels, Chet Faker, Kelis, Thee Oh Sees, Little Man, Battleme, Anthony Valadez and Haley Bonar + exciting new sounds from Bob freakin' Mould, the Bamboos, La Santa Cecilia and much, much more... So sit back, buckle up, put on your headphones AND your sunscreen cause we're "Smokin'"!

Bob Mould
"Hey Mr. Grey"
'Beauty & Ruin'
Merge, 2014
Notes: "Well into his fourth decade of writing and performing, Bob Mould is both an elder statesman reflecting on his past and a still-thriving songwriter in a late-career renaissance... Mould announced that he and his current backing band of drummer Jon Wurster [Superchunk] and bassist Jason Narducy [Split Single] had recorded Beauty & Ruin, his eleventh solo album, in late 2013 for release this summer. The first single from that album, “Hey Mr. Grey”, plays to all of Mould’s strengths: it’s fast, hard, melodic, and incisive."
(@BobMouldMusic)

The Bamboos
"Helpless Blues/Avenger"
'Fever In the Road'
Nettwerk, 2014
Notes: It kinda sounds like they've been listening to Little Dragon... "Not the usual hard funk that Melbourne’s The Bamboos supply, “Avenger” feels as if it waltzed out of an early James Bond film, martini and all. Armed with a thick bass line and a steady drum-beat, the track has a total sixties feel a bit like early B-52s... In fact, Fever In the Road seems to be a total artistic re-visioning for the band, leaving listeners entangled in their smooth wake." And with their sixth record, they make the leap to mighty indie, Nettwerk.
(@The_Bamboos)

La Santa Cecilia
"Someday, Someday New"
'Someday New'
Universal Music Latino y Arju, 2014
Notes: "The alternative rock group “La Santa Cecilia” took home a Grammy for “Best Latin Rock, Urban or Alternative Album” for their album “Treinta Días” [EP] – and promptly dedicated their win to the approximately 11 million undocumented immigrants currently living in the U.S."
(@LaSantaCecilia)

Ray Lamontagne
"Ojai"
'Supernova'
RCA, 2014
Notes: "Ray LaMontagne is arguably part of the current wave of talented, root-rock artists who are thriving in a commercial atmosphere where many fans are seeking a respite from digitized percussion, Auto-tuned voices, and cold synth atmospheres. LaMontagne released his first major label record in 2004 and had success... " LaMontagne's fifth full-length is Dan Auerbach's 347th production job this week ;p
(@RayLaMontagne)

The Hold Steady
"Spinners"
'Teeth Dreams'
Washington Square/Razor and Tie, 2014
Notes: "It’s reassuring that after a three-year break, everything is not right in the beer-soaked, crowded-at-2 a.m., anthemic barroom universe of The Hold Steady. When the Brooklyn band emerged in 2004, lead singer Craig Finn’s songs caught acclaim for their detailed morning-after retellings of the night before... “Spinners” is a reminder that The Hold Steady are great at sending dispatches from the gutter, but more than that, it’s a sign that they’re ready to discover what happens when you leave that life behind."
(@TheHoldSteady)

Pink Mountaintops
"Ambulance City"
'Get Back'
Jagjaguwar, 2014
Notes: "Originally started by Black Mountain's Steve McBean as a dreamy, more lo-fi alternative to the hearty rock thrills of the day-job, Pink Mountaintops have evolved across their career to fit the whims of their frontman. Here on their fourth LP, the band seem to be hung up around some sort of second adolescence, crafting a set of fizzing, nostalgic songs that aim to capture that particularly exciting, nihilistic time of life." This is the Vancouver, B.C. band's fourth record (all on Jagjaguwar) and they also share members with Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Silver Mt. Zion, Delta 72, Black Angels, Cat Power, Cold War Kids and more!
(@PinkMtps)

Eels
"Mistakes of My Youth"
'The Cautionary Tales of Mark Oliver Everett'
E Works/PIAS, 2014
Notes: "Throughout recording 10 studio albums in nearly 20 years, he’s called himself E, the Dog Faced Boy, and Hombre Lobo, and has appeared bearded and bandana-ed, goggled and jump-suited, bespeckled and formally attired, and in a variety of other guises, but on his 11th LP, Mark Oliver Everett takes off the mask. On The Cautionary Tales of Mark Oliver Everett, the Eels frontman eschews fictional narratives and rock ethos for raw introspection and individual pathos. As his “tales” explore personal loss and the potential for recovery and growth, Mark Oliver Everett hopes they might “serve as some sort of example for others. To learn from my mistakes.”" We previously heard a double shot from Eels back on Episode045.
(@The_Eels)

Chet Faker
"Talk Is Cheap/Gold"
'Built On Glass'
Downtown, 2014
Notes: "Behind the grizzly beard and stoic eyes of Chet Faker is an emotive voice and an engaging songwriter who crafts his smooth, low-key electronic/R&B hybrid one mellifluous vocal line at a time... As “Gold” and Talk is Cheap prove, sometimes the most affecting music is also the most understated." Making his third appearance on PUTV, the Melbourne man gives us a double shot form his latest release.
(@Chet_Faker)

The Woodentops
"Smokin'"
'Granular Tales'
Cherry Red, 2014
Notes: "As they traveled through the 1980s UK indie scene, The Woodentops’ adventurous musical spirit and constantly vital live performances embodied the shifting nature of the era... the band continued touring through 1992 before calling it a day. In 2006, the band regrouped to put on sporadic live performances, and earlier this year, released their first album in 25 years, Granular Tales... “Smokin’” is appropriately heady, riding a midtempo groove..."
(@WoodentopsMusic)

Ben & Ellen Harper
"A House Is a Home"
'Childhood Home'
Prestige Folklore, 2014
Notes: "Three-time Grammy Award-winner Ben Harper travels the world performing his music, but he always returns to a special place in California, and to his mother, Ellen. For 30 years, Ellen Harper has been running the Folk Music Center in Claremont, Calif., which her parents founded in 1958. "It's a lot of things: It's a retail store, it's a museum, it's a educational institution," she said... During his nearly 20-year professional career, Ben Harper has released 15 albums. This week, he released his 16th and latest album, a collaboration with his mother Ellen -- just in time for Mother's Day. It's called "Childhood Home.""
(@BenHarper)

Kan Wakan
"Like I Need You"
'Moving On'
Verve, 2014
Notes: "Kan Wakan combine deep soul, dramatic folk, and orchestral pop for a noir-kissed sound that could re-score a vintage James Bond flick with ease and grace. At the heart of the Los Angeles band are Bulgarian-born composer Gueorgui I. Linev, bona fide chanteuse Kristianne Bautista, and ace guitarist/producer Peter Potyondy, and...you can hear their combined might." They're also riding the wave of having this track be "that song on the HBO commercial," too!
(@KanWakan)

Kelis
"Cobbler"
'Food'
Ninja Tune, 2014
Notes: "Kelis’s sixth album is a moveable feast of old-school soul, ballsy blues, breathy doo-wop and a folk ballad. Food was forged from an unlikely partnership with Dave Sitek from TV on the Radio, and it provides a completely different flavour to the Kelis who rapped about her milkshake with The Neptunes, or a capella-ed over David Guetta’s EDM beats." Kelis is making her second bow on PUTV with another slice of 'Food'.
(@iAmKelis)

Chimurenga Renaissance
"The B.A.D. Is So Good"
'riZe vadZimu riZe'
Brick Lane, 2014
Notes: "Since the inception of Shabazz Palaces, and with the release of Black Up on Sub Pop and the forthcoming, highly-anticipated Lese Majesty, Tendai “Baba” Maraire and Ishmael Butler have been receiving a lot of positive press for their involvement in the experimental rap scene. They’ve also both have been involved with other projects around [Seattle] town... “The B.A.D. Is So Good,” the second track on riZe vadZimu riZe, is a socio-cultural critique, commenting on the status of the American Dream." Whoa, their website drops knowledge bombs about Cecil Rhodes and conspiratorial imperialism!
(@Maraire)

Thee Oh Sees
"Drop"
'Drop'
Castleface, 2014
Notes: "The Bay Area’s most prolific contemporary thrashers, Thee Oh Sees, are a force of strange nature. Led by mastermind John Dwyer, the amorphous group seemingly record and perform constantly, producing brilliant, sharp garage ditties virtually around the clock. As a consequence, the ragtag group has conjured a revival for psychedelia and ushered in a further appreciation of music rooted in early garage sensibilities." The mega-prolific band is one of our most played on PUTV and this is their sixth appearance!
(@TheeOhSees)

Little Man
"Medicinal"
'Original Face'
self-released, 2014
Notes: "The album is a cohesive romp through the best of glam rock minus all the pretense. Skillfully recorded at Minneapolis’ Flowers Studio...the album could have been on the soundtrack for the movie Velvet Goldmine... The highlight of the album is the track “Medicinal”, Perricelli channels the glam rock vocal stylings of T.Rex and Bowie perfectly." We first heard from the successfully crowd-funded 'Original Face' album back on Episode097.
(@ChrisPerricelli)

Battleme
"Don’t You Worry About Me Tonight" (Live on KUTX)
'Future Runs Magnetic'
El Camino, 2014
Notes: "There aren't a lot of frills or gimmicks surrounding Battleme's second album Future Runs Magnetic because, simply put, the music speaks for itself. Bombastic, driving and powerful, the album is a timeless collection of rock anthems." It's the second slab from Battleme on PUTV, but my buddy got the boot as their drummer :( So he's on the album, but not this on live cut from KUTX...
(@Battleme)

Fear Of Men
"Alta/Waterfall"
'Loom'
Kanine, 2014
Notes: "Brighton-based indie band Fear Of Men has decided to give the world a little sample of...their first full-length... the U.K. group is streaming the two tracks that will open the album, “Alta” and “Waterfall.” “Alta” is a ghostly and bare 50-second intro that seamlessly builds and resolves into “Waterfall” — a track packed with melodic guitar riffs, steady drum beats, and whimsical lyrics."
(@FearOfMen)

Fujiya and Miyagi
"Vagaries of Fashion"
'Artificial Sweeteners'
Yep Roc, 2014
Notes: "Brighton-based trio Fujiya & Miyagi has long existed as a lower-calorie take on Hot Chip and Junior Boys, albeit with a secret ingredient...a few licks from Krautrockers past... This fifth studio LP certainly has plenty of highs to keep the good times coming on strong."
(@FujiyaAndMiyagi)

Anthony Valadez
"Searching For" (w/ Miles Bonny)
'In Search Of...'
Plug Research, 2014
Notes: "“Searching For”, the first single off LA airwave champion Anthony Valadez‘s sophomore LP In Search Of... Its a feathery slow jam laced with clean 808s, fluttering hi-hats, a candied Rhodes groove and Miles Bonny‘s mid-range croon. Originally intended as a straight instrumental LP, In Search Of.. morphed into the organic soul review that it is..." It's the third time we've heard from Valadez, just one of KCRW's multi-talented jocks.
(@AnthonyValadez)

Beaty Heart
"Lekka Freakout"
'Mixed Blessings'
Nusic, 2014
Notes: "Beaty Heart’s name, quite possibly a self-fulfilling prophecy, signifies the way the group approaches composition. The UK trio strives to enliven, awaken, and re-animate through filtered psych-pop and heavily-layered percussion... “Lekka Freakout,” a track from their upcoming debut album, serves as a prime example of their sonic capabilities. Asynchronous vocals, a marimba-influenced back-beat, and fuzzy guitar..."
(@BeatyHeart)

Sohn
"Artiface"
'Tremors'
4AD, 2014
Notes: The London singer "established a reputation for producing, after rolling out remixes of a laundry list of the 2013’s best artists: Rhye, Lana Del Rey, Haim, Banks, and Angel Haze... For his first solo album...Sohn turns his focus inward, offering a distillation of the seductive, deeply cool flavor that give his remixes their distinctive edge."
(@Sohn)

Metronomy
"The Upsetter"
'Love Letters'
Because, 2013
Notes: "“I’m back out on the Riviera”, Joseph Mount sings on “The Upsetter”, the first track on Metronomy’s new album, Love Letters. The line is, of course, a coy reference to The English Riviera, Metronomy’s breakthrough 2011 album... “The Upsetter” does really read like a love letter, from a marooned ex-lover who is “stuck in 1992 here…Playing ‘I Will Always Love You’, yeah”. Melancholy acoustic guitars and an emotive, Lindsey Buckingham-like coda solo underscore Mount’s wounded sincerity, despite his quirky falsetto."
(@Metronomy)

Haley Bonar
"No Sensitive Man"
'Last War'
Graveface, 2013
Notes: "Haley Bonar [pronounced "Bonner"] first reached a national audience as a teenager, when fellow Minnesotan Alan Sparhawk heard her perform and offered her a spot on tour, opening for his band Low. At the time, the pairing made sense: Her recordings were sweet and lovely, but also frequently dour. Over time, though, Bonar...has brightened and polished her sound to a glistening shine. With nine songs in just a shade past half an hour, her new fifth album, Last War, is tough to set aside." We heard the title track "Last War" from Haley back on Episode097.
(@HaleyBonar)

Cheap Star
"Kelly Slayer"
'Rosetta Stone' EP
Z & Zoé, 2014
Notes: "Cheap Star may not all be from Seattle, but they have a strong local connection, as their latest EP, Rosetta Stone, was produced and recorded by both Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer of The Posies, who also contribute bass and additional guitar to the songs... “Kelly Slayer”, is dynamic and rich with moving parts: big guitar solo, rolling drums (thanks to Fountains of Wayne’s Brian Young)..."
(@CheapStar)

This week's b-sides: Thomas Dybdahl, Del Castillo, La Vida Boheme, A. Sinclair, Making Movies, Chicha Libre, Sturgill Simpson and Truckfighters

Investigative journalist Jon Rappoprt's article, 'US Jazz Musicians Were Drafted Into the CIA’s MKULTRA,' caught my ear so he's joining Media Monarchy for some classic 'Acid Dreams'. Why did Chet Baker, Sonny Rollins, Elvin Jones and so many more great musicians take the 'Lexinton Cure' at the CIA-connected 'Narcotic Farm'? Who was Harris Isbell and what did he do at Lex? And the real question: Why do intelligence agencies use art as a weapon?

♬Liner Notes♬: An otherworldly mix of music from all around the world that will make your brain dance as a much as your ass! Featuring Sharon Van Etten, Octopus Project, HABITATS, UMO, TOY, CUZ and many more things in ALL CAPS! Let's PUTV!

Adanowsky
"Dancing to the Radio"
'ADA'
Everloving, 2014
Note: "As the son of Alejandro Jodorowsky, Adan Jodorowsky had the advantage of running in creative circles early in life. James Brown instructed him in his first dance lesson and George Harrison gave him his first guitar. Jodorowsky learned his lessons well, bringing soul to his electro pop dance tunes. It’s all about pleasure on ADA. “I wanted something sweaty and gross. I wanted to feel the drugs on this album. I’m not a drug addict at all but I wanted people to feel that same kind of high in the music.”"
(More Info)

CUZ
"Tamatebako"
'Tamatebako'
Bleeding Heart, 2014
Note: "Since his emergence as the bassist of the influential punk combo The Minutemen, Mike Watt has engaged himself in a wide range of musical projects that have taken him, geographically and stylistically, to all kinds of new territories. The latest of these projects is CUZ, a collaboration with guitarist Sam Dook (The Go! Team) that began in 2006 when the two met at Australia’s Big Day Out festival."
(More Info)

Saintseneca
"Happy Alone"
'Dark Arc'
-ANTI, 2014
Note: When we first heard Saintseneca two weeks ago, it was a live cut from KUTX. So now let's listen to what the studio album sounds like... "Imagine sitting by a lake within the Appalachians in southern Ohio, among dense forestry with maybe a deer or two in sight. Bust out your guitar, grab a few musical companions, and the resulting sound would resemble the quintessential tree music that is Saintseneca... Dark Arc is the band’s Anti- debut and the studio effort we’ve been waiting for..."
(More Info)

Unknown Mortal Orchestra
"Swim And Sleep (Like A Shark)"
'II'
Jagjaguwar, 2013
Note: They're still getting some attention for their now-over a year old album, so they must be doing something right. It's their third appearance on PUTV and third cut from the album 'II'. "Unknown Mortal Orchestra's Ruban Nielson has a tattoo of an eye on his neck – specifically, on his throat chakra, said to rule communication. Somewhat surprisingly, the 32-year-old New Zealand-born, Oregon-dwelling musician claimed to music website Pitchfork recently that he is not a hippy... Swim and Sleep (Like a Shark), the album's first single, also conjoins sleep, prettiness and unease..." They were just in Portland opening for Little Dragon and someone I know was not a fan. They're the first of four bands on the show this week that are playing this weekend’s Austin Psych Fest.
(More Info)

Cody ChestnuTT
"Gunpowder on the Letter" (w/ Gary Clark Jr.)
'Landing On A Hundred: B Sides and Remixes'
Vibration Vineyard, 2014
Note: Last heard way back on Episode032, the ATL troubadour returns with new old music featuring guitar firebrand "Gary Clark Jr for the bounce-inducing church blues of “Gunpowder On The Letter”, his first drop from the upcoming B-Side & Remixes cut of his stellar Landing On A Hundred LP. Clark and ChesnuTT trade off sliding licks and croon supreme all over this shuffling rocker, perfectly melding each of their strong suits..."
(More Info)

Gentlemen
"Gentle Duke"
'Night Reels II' EP
Week Of Wonders, 2014
Note: This is the UK group's second release... "Taking note of the heavy psychedelic British bands of the late ’60s and refining their sludgy fury into something more precise, London’s Gentlemen continue the lineage of those bands with their bold, slightly-warped jams... “Gentle Duke” may owe some debt to Gentlemen’s psychedelic predecessors, but by relying on the same kind of musicianship that’s held true in the genre for decades, they more than make them proud."
(More Info)

Octopus Project
"Sharpteeth"
'Fever Forms'
Peek-A-Boo, 2014
Note: "Somewhere in the far-out, Seussian world where art, music, rock ‘n’ roll and electronica meet, you’ll find The Octopus Project... three years after the release of the ambitious, multi-media exploration Hexadecagon... The record is a joyful, experimental electro-pop album...few of the songs represent the sound and feel of the record better than the closer, and second single “Sharpteeth.”... They’ve made it past 10-year mark as a band, their new album finds them still in fine form." They're playing their local Austin Psych Fest and we thank them again for the tweet love!
(More Info)

Hauschka
"Craco"
'Abandoned City'
City Slang / Temporary Residence, 2014
Note: "Last year, [German composer] Volker Bertelmann (more commonly known as Hauschka) played a show at the Bristol Proms, a series of concerts designed to demonstrate to classical music audiences young and old that classical music was not dead, merely presented in the wrong way... it's an example of the decidedly wobbly lines that Hauschka's music is still straddling, ten albums in... Loosely conceived as a tour of deserted metropoles (each track has the name of a different existing city, with the exception of 'Elizabeth Bay' and 'Who Lived Here?'), the album's greatest strength is in conjuring up the image of its subjects... 'Craco' has its feet directly planted in the Ludovico Einaudi camp of accessibility."
(More Info)

TOY
"It’s Been So Long"
'Join The Dots'
Heavenly, 2013
Note: We heard "Endlessly" from TOY back on Episode093. "London’s TOY are intentional in ways that most psychedelic bands aren’t these days. The group likes to jam a lot, building huge walls of sound out of guitar effects. But their jams tend to go somewhere, reflecting the subtle pop attitude that lurks beneath all the atmosphere. TOY seem equally smitten with the Cure, My Bloody Valentine, and ’60s psych–there’s a reason their second album is called Join The Dots... “It’s Been So Long” treads this line well: the guitars and drums roar like a jet engine, but there’s a bittersweet element..." They're also playing at this weekend’s Austin Psych Fest.
(More Info)

HABITATS
"Diamond Days"
Club Fandango/Fierce Panda, 2014
Note: "Like Foals and Bombay Bicycle Club, HABITATS resound, on their debut single release, with the same catchy caliber dished out by many of the UK-based dance-rockers. Situated in Hampshire and the London area, the mayhem-causing, beard-loving, quartet...have been creating infectious dance-beats to escape from the generic environment of popular music... Blooming with kinetic energy, “Diamond Days,” their newest song, is a groovy track that will knock you off your feet (if you aren’t already dancing; which, if you’re not, you totally should be), and launch you, head-first, into an experimental, tropical-rock cosmos."
(More Info)

Black Diet
"Nothing To Say"
'Find Your Tambourine'
Piñata, 2014
Note: And the soul-loving sounds keep on comin'! "Black Diet is a garage/indie/soul band with a sartorial flair. Indebted to Stax records, they put on shows that look like Baptist church services held at punk houses. Part of a stream of vintage sounding acts coming out of Minneapolis' Pinata Records, they're spitting out sharp, testimonial jams for the masses."
(More Info)

Sharon Van Etten
"Taking Chances"
'Are We There?'
Jagjaguwar, 2014
Note: "The track is the first to be taken from her new album 'Are We There?'... The video was directed by Michael Palmieri and plays homage to Agnès Varda's 1962 film Cleo from 5 to 7. The mystical promo sees Van Etten reading tarot cards... Van Etten's new album, 'Are We There?', which is set for release on May 26... Speaking to NME recently about the new album, Van Etten revealed that she used instruments used by John Lennon and Patti Smith in the recording of the LP."
(More Info)

Holy Wave
"Do You Feel It"
'Relax'
self-released, 2014
Note: Pay no mind to the obvious bites from Jimi Hendrix and 13th Floor Elevators, just feel that fuzz wash over your third eye. "[Austin's] Holy Wave are clearly students of the fuzz 'n' Farfisa branch of psychedelia...but their commitment to a properly expanded mind never seems less than total..." Our fourth and final this week, they're also appropriately playing this weekend’s Austin Psych Fest.
(More Info)

Thievery Corporation
"Quem Me Leva" (w/ Elin Melgarejo)
'Saudade'
ESL, 2014
Note: "Thievery Corporation has hit the reset button with their seventh full length album, Saudade. Named after a Portuguese word with no direct English translation, “saudade” refers to a nostalgic longing for something which has been lost." We heard a teaser track last month from the DC legends, now the full-length has landed on their own Eighteenth Street Lounge label. They seem to flip back and forth between ultra-political and just smooth, international dance.
(More Info)

Pillar Point
"Eyeballs"
'Pillar Point'
Polyvinyl, 2014
Note: "Named for both a bay in California and a town in Washington, Pillar Point was first conceived as an outlet for songs Seattle’s Scott Reitherman felt wouldn’t fit his other project, indie pop group Throw Me The Statue. Decidedly more darker and dance-oriented than that band’s catalog... “Eyeballs”, a smooth, melodic track that splits the difference between early 2000s’ bedroom electronic music and early ’80s New Wave, benefits from a clockwork construction..."
